- Nintendo has given an update on its progress on the Switch successor
- Nintendo’s successor to the Switch is still scheduled to arrive early 2025
- Other details about the console have been released

The Nintendo Switch has been hugely popular since it was launched in 2017, but a successor is expected soon, and the company has provided an update on this.
Nintendo’s Switch has sold more than 130 million units worldwide since its launch, but it is reaching the end of its lifecycle. Here is what we know so far about its successor.
Earlier this year, Nintendo bosses confirmed that more information on the successor to the Switch will be released before the end of the first quarter of 2025. The end of March also marks the end of the fiscal year. However, since then very little information has been released about the new console, until now.
Switch 2?
What we know here is that we don’t know. Nintendo has consistently refused to put a name to the console so far. It has been nicknamed Switch 2 by fans, but whether it will be called this by Nintendo remains to be seen.
Backwards compatibility
One feature that Nintendo has confirmed is that the Switch successor will be backwards compatible with existing Switch games. This was confirmed in a post on X (everyone still calls it Twitter) by Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa. This will be a relief to gamers – and those who buy the games. This is something Nintendo has often done with consoles in the past, such as with the WiiU and Wii.
Furukawa also confirmed that Nintendo Switch Online will also be available on the successor to the Switch.
More information to come
Furukawa has also hinted that other elements of the new console will be compatible with the Switch. Concluding his X post he said: “Further information about the successor to Nintendo Switch, including its compatibility with Nintendo Switch, will be announced at a later date.”
With anticipation rising for the successor to the Switch, Nintendo will be watched closely for any updates from now until the end of March 2025.
