There is a new question on the lips of Nintendo fans – who is Emio? After the company unexpectedly dropped a trailer for what looks like a horror game.

Who Is Emio?

With no fanfare, Nintendo dropped a short trailer on social media featuring a creepy character dressed in a trenchcoat with a paper bag over his head with a smiley face drawn on standing in a dimly lit room. With it came a hashtag #WhoIsEmio?

The trailer has caught seemingly everyone by surprise – and there is little to no more information about who (or what) Emio is, or what the game might be about. There is a website, but all that has is the creepy figure, who occasionally, briefly, changes his expression. Other than that, we have nothing – no release date, developer information, gameplay.

Online interest

While teasing a horror film or game in such a way as this is nothing new, it does mark a departure from Nintendo, which isn’t known for games like this. Usually, the closest Nintendo gets to horror is the Luigi’s Mansion series.

Unsurprisingly, the trailer has created a lot of interest online. One poster on X (formerly Twitter) said: “getting excited for a possible new horror IP from Nintendo” was not on my 2024 bingo card, but here we are!”

Nintendo is also being secretive about its plans for the successor console to the Switch. It was thought that the console would be released this year, but now it will be available sometimes before the end of March 2025, according to a recent statement from Shuntaro Furukawa, president of Nintendo.
