Sony has warned gamers that there will be no new games for any of its existing major franchises before April 2025.
In news that will disappoint gamers across the globe, it means that we will not see new games in franchises such as God of War or Spider-Man for more than a year.
In a financial call, Sony Interactive Entertainment’s boss, Hiroki Totoki said the company aims to continue to focus on developing high-quality works and developing live service games. He added that while major projects are in development, there are no plans to release new titles in existing franchises in the next financial year.
But that doesn’t mean there aren’t upcoming games for PS5 users to get excited about this year. There are new franchises coming up for release this year, such as Firewalk Studios’ Concord.
There may also be more remakes of titles that were big on the PS4 – see the success of The Last of Us Part II Remastered, which came out last year.
There are other PS5 exclusives to look out for, such as Square Enix’s Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, as well as action games such as Stellar Blade and Rise of the Ronin.
This news comes after it was revealed that sales of the PS5 had not met company expectations – despite a huge marketing effort. Sony had targeted sales of 25 million during this financial year, but despite selling 8.1 million PS5s in the three months to the end of December 2023, Sony has now said it expects to sell nearer 21 million over the year.
It has also been confirmed by Sony bosses that the PS5 – launched in 2020 – is starting to enter the latter stage of its lifecycle, despite the PS5 slim being released just months ago. Consoles usually have a lifespan of about seven years, before being replaced.
