In a statement, Pablo Policicchio, a spokesperson for the security ministry of Buenos Aires, said Payne “had thrown himself from the balcony of his room,” according to Sky News.
Policicchio added police had been called to the hotel in response to an emergency call about an “aggressive man who could be under the influence of drugs or alcohol.”

One Direction fame
Payne shot to fame in 2010 as part of One Direction when they competed in TV show X Factor in the UK. Along with Zayn Malik, Louis Tomlinson, Niall Horan and Harry Styles, Payne went on to have a string of hit singles and albums in the UK, the US and around the world. The band went on hiatus in 2015. Since then, Payne has embarked on a solo career.
He had been in Argentina to attend a concert by former bandmate Horan, and they along with the rest of the band had reunited at the show, according to TMZ.
Payne leaves behind a six-year-old son, who he shared with fellow singer Cheryl Tweedy. The pair began dating in 2016, with their son born a year later. They split up in 2018.
