Onimusha: Way of the Sword developed and published by Capcom is scheduled to be released for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S and PC in 2026. The game was announced with a CGI trailer at last year’s Game Awards.

Musashi Leads Onimusha’s Comeback

First introduced in 2001, Capcom’s Onimusha franchise delivered several fantasy-themed action games throughout the early to mid-2000s. Although many of these titles received strong appreciation, the Japanese gaming giant eventually reduced the development on the series.

Capcom has released a fresh trailer Onimusha: Way of the Sword at PlayStation‘s State of Play and introduced a new protagonist Miyamoto Musashi.

A legendary Japanese swordsman, Musashi was from Edo period. He was well known for his skilled blade techniques, who has showed his unparalleled skills in combat here as well.

First look at gameplay has been provided in this trailer. The highlights of this trailer include intense tactical combats combined with strategic planning and calculated decision making and defensive maneuvers.

Strategic Combat & Dark Fantasy

Musashi fights through dangerous zombie samurai in the trailer’s intense combat sequences. The combat system in Onimusha offers a satisfying gameplay approach, avoiding the flashy action typical of modern video games and delivering a distinctive experience.

Its deliberate and tactical nature promises a more immersive experience. In a press release, Capcom describes Onimusha: Way of the Sword as a dark fantasy action following one of Japan’s historical legends. Notably, the design for Musashi draws its inspiration from Toshiro Mifune who became known for playing the heroic swordsman in classic samurai films during his lifetime.

The storyline in Way of the Sword takes us to Kyoto where Malice’s dark power spread through the city while tearing open hell’s gates to release demonic creatures across Japan.

Marking the first new Onimusha game after the silence of more than two decades, this long-awaited installment brings the franchise back with a dark and intense new chapter.

In the trailer, Miyamoto Musashi is seen skillfully dealing with multiple enemies before shifting to a more aggressive fighting style. This suggests that defensive tactics will play a key role in combat, as Musashi frequently finds himself outnumbered, requiring a strategic and calculated approach to each battle.

Earlier, the developers of Onimusha: Way of the Sword outlined three core aspects that they will be working on: Compelling characters, Kyoto setting, and ultimate sword fighting action.

While Capcom has only revealed limited details so far, fans are eagerly anticipating more updates on Onimusha: Way of the Sword in the near future.
