Paramount+ has dropped a trailer for the upcoming Knuckles TV series – and it looks wild.

Billed by Paramount+ as a six-episode event, everyone’s favourite super-strong anthropomorphic red echidna returns in his own show.

The action takes place after the events of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 – which ended with Knuckles staying with Sonic, Tails and their human friends after saving the world together – but before Sonic the Hedgehog 3, which is set to hit cinemas just before Christmas this year.

In welcome news for a TV spin-off of a movie franchise, all the main character and voice actors reprise their roles. Idris Elba voices the titular echidna – as well as picking up an exec producer credit – and Adam Pally stars as Wade Whipple, a deputy sheriff of Green Hills.

The series will focus on Knuckles and his attempts to train Wade in the ways of an echidna warrior, a quest he undertakes partly to stave off his own boredom as his adoptive human family disapprove of his plans for setting up a gladiator fighting pit in the house.

But while that may be hilarious by itself, there is a growing threat to Knuckles from ‘The Buyer’, a former henchman of Doctor Robotnik – or Eggman to Sonic – who wants to harness Knuckles’ power for his own nefarious ends. He sends agents, as well as robots, to try and capture him.

There is also an interesting Easter Egg in the trailer – a brief appearance of another echidna, hinting that we might find out more about Knuckles’ past too.

There are new characters to enjoy too, played by some familiar faces. Cary Elwes plays ‘Pistol’ Pete Whipple: an eccentric 27-time championship bowler and a relative of Wade’s, while Stockard Channing is Wendy Whipple, Wade’s mother.

All six episodes of Knuckles are set to drop on Paramount+ on April 26.
