The internet is mourning another victim of discontinuation and this time it’s Lipton ice tea. The company has made ice tea flavors for years and has said goodbye to one of its most popular ones. This is almost as bad as the death of the Duolingo owl. In a post on Instagram, the company account posted a photo of a Lipton Peach Ice Tea can wearing angel wings with the caption, “Who’s joining my peach support group?

Their statement on Instagram said: “You may have heard that our iconic Peach Lipton Ice Tea flavor is getting discontinued. We know – it hurts (sorry if we’ve ruined your go-to afternoon bev). But don’t worry, the rest of your faves are still here to keep you refreshed.”

Sarcastically, Lipton apologized for the inconvenience and hinted one day Peach could “make a legendary comeback.” The company reposted the image on Instagram Stories and changed its profile picture to a photo of the deceased Peach flavor. Rest in peace, Peach.

Naturally, fans of the popular drink flavor were baffled that they’d discontinue it. Arguably, the best-selling ice tea flavors from Lipton are peach and lemon, at least we think so!

The internet mourned the loss. Find out how social media users reacted here.

How did the internet react to the loss of Lipton Peach Ice Tea?

Lipton Peach Ice Tea launched just over 20 years ago and became one of their most popular flavors, so Peach Ice Tea stans were devastated by its loss online.

The best flavor of ice tea?

Many social media users argued on X that the discontinuation of Lipton Peach Ice Tea was terrible because it’s the best flavor.

On X one user declared, “Lipton peach ice tea getting discontinued has ruined my Tuesday”.

Another user claimed, “This is literally their only successful flavor I’m crying”. The company has recently launched three kombucha flavors in the UK. Strawberry Mint, Raspberry, and Mango Passionfruit, so it’s not like they don’t have money to keep it!

Meanwhile, others were in disbelief about the “best flavor” going away.

Bad marketing decision for Lipton Peach Ice Tea?

Others online made a point that it was bad for the company since peach is their most well-known flavor. One user claimed it was “the only flavor” people buy.

Boldly one post declared the person behind this marketing decision should be “fired.”

On the other hand, other users online speculated that the removal of the Peach Ice Tea flavor was a marketing tactic. After all, the statement did hint at a “legendary comeback” being possible. What if they were rebranding or changing the recipe of the peach ice tea, so they announced they were ‘killing’ Lipton Peach Ice Tea? Just a thought.

Peach is not the best flavor, according to some users

At the same time, a debate online ensued about whether peach is the best flavor.

In a post, one user said the discontinuation made them realize other flavors are better.

The user wrote: “With the whole discontinuation of the peach ice tea I realized everyone hates the lemon one?? But it’s the second best one only losing to mango and in third place goes to the peach one.”

Bravely, another user posted a GIF of the ‘happy, happy, happy’ cat to express excitement at the death of Lipton Peach Ice Tea.

In reply to the post, one user wrote, “You’re evil”. We agree!

A social media declared their love for the mango flavor. The user said in a post, “Well the mango one is better, you won’t be missed”.

Is it a marketing decision?

The theory that Lipton did this as a marketing decision is not far-fetched. The Duolingo owl ‘death’ is a good example of a successful marketing ploy.

This was a marketing campaign designed to boost engagement on the language learning app. On the Duolingo social account, the nocturnal owl declared the faking of his death was to get people to do their language lessons. Duo warned next time the death would not be fake.

@duolingo

It was all by design because I’m a mastermind #duolingo
