Are there any movies from the 1980s that aren’t being rebooted right now? The latest confirmed for a 2020s update is 1989 classic The ‘Burbs.

What lies beneath

Peacock has hit the green light on the show, which will be produced by, among others, Seth McFarlane’s Fuzzy Door company.

The plot of the show will be along the lines of the original, which starred Tom Hanks and the late Carrie Fisher. In The ‘Burbs, a young couple move to a new neighbourhood that seems quiet and idyllic, but it soon transpires that everything is not as it seems.

The official synopsis for the show is as follows: “Set in present-day suburbia, The ‘Burbs follows a young couple returning to the husband’s childhood home. Their world is upended when new neighbors move in next door, bringing old secrets of the cul-de-sac to light, and new deadly threats shatter the illusion of their quiet little neighborhood.”

Confirmed involvement

The first actor to be confirmed on the show is Keke Palmer, who will also have an executive producer role.

Celeste Hughey is writing the script for the show. McFarlane is also on board as an executive producer, as is Dana Olsen who wrote the original screenplay, among others.

How many episodes will be in the series has yet to be confirmed. Likewise, a date for the show to hit screens hasn’t been shared.

Another classic movie from the 1980s to get the TV series treatment is Robocop – it has been confirmed that Peter Ocko is on board to write the scripts and serve as showrunner.
