Hero shooter Concord – only launched on PlayStation last month – will be taken down on September 6, with players receiving a full refund, according to Sony.

Concord was released for PS5 and PC on August 23 but has reportedly not had the expected take-up from gamers.

Refunds coming

In a post on Sony’s website, Ryan Ellis, game director at Firewalk Studios, which developed the game, confirmed the news that it was being pulled and that those who had paid $50 would be refunded.

Ellis added that the company had been “listening closely” to feedback from players. “While many qualities of the experience resonated with players, we also recognize that other aspects of the game and our initial launch didn’t land the way we intended,” he said.

In Concord, players are part of a team comprising different characters with individual abilities. Gameplay can be straight deathmatches or can involve capturing objects or control of a specific area of the arena.

Difficult market

The game was the latest game to try and break into the multiplayer or live-service space. While Helldivers 2 had huge success earlier this year, it is largely an exception as the market is difficult to break into, as long-established titles such as Minecraft, Roblox and League of Legends still have hundreds of thousands of players. Concord had a high of 660 concurrent users, according to SteamDB. It also received mixed reviews from critics, who said it didn’t offer anything new to the genre.

But while the game will be offline from Friday, it doesn’t mean that it is the end of it. Ellis said the developers would now be exploring options for the game “including those that will better reach our players.”
