- A rectangular monolith with a reflective structure has appeared in the Nevada desert near Las Vegas
- Local police have no idea how it appeared
- Similar to other monoliths that have appeared around the world in recent years

Local police – and the wider internet – has been baffled by the appearance over the weekend of a monolith in the Nevada desert outside Las Vegas.
The rectangular monolith, which has reflective surfaces, was spotted last weekend near Gass Peak, an area popular with hikers and seems to have been embedded there.
Police stumped
Las Vegas Police took to X (formerly Twitter) with pictures of the bizarre find, posting: “We see a lot of weird things when people go hiking like not being prepared for the weather, not bringing enough water… but check this out!”
Thus far, the police are stumped, and nobody has come forward to claim responsibility for it.
But this isn’t the first time a monolith has appeared apparently out of nowhere, with no clue as to how it got there. About four years ago, several monoliths like the Nevada one appeared around the world. One was in the Utah desert, with others appearing in California, Romania and the Isle of Wight off the English coast.
At the time, there was speculation that they were part of an art installation, but nobody came forward to say they were behind it.
Similarly, a monolith appeared on a hilltop in Wales in March – again with no clues as to who put it there or why.
Internet speculation
Of course, the internet has had its say on what it could be or who put it there. Some said it could be artists or pranksters, others wondered if it might be extraterrestrial. “Alien antenna idk….? Weird, what’s the point? Who would spend $ on that?”
Others were more cynical. One X user said: “Just remove the trash, find who dumped it, and fine them.”
