In a crowded field. Rapunzel from Tangled has been voted by fans of Pubity as the greatest Disney princess of all time in a new ‘You Decide’ poll.
Strong competition
Rapunzel – the version from the 2010 movie Tangled – won 57% of the vote in the ‘You Decide’ final, taking the crown ahead of Mulan, who took 43.
Tangled was loosely based on ‘Rapunzel’ by The Brothers Grimm. It tells the story of a young princess with magical hair who yearns to leave the secluded tower she is confined to by Gothel, who kidnapped her as a baby. But when outlaw Flynn Rider turns up at her tower, he shows her the promise of the outside world.
As usual with Pubity’s You Decide competitions, the greatest Disney princess of all time was decided after a series of knockout rounds. Sixteen princesses started, but only one could win. En route to the final, Rapunzel defeated Cinderella in the first round, Princess Jasmine from Aladdin in the quarter final, Belle from Beauty and the Beast in the semi final.
Mulan’s route to the final was no less tough. She defeated Kida from Atlantis: The Lost Empire in the first round, then took down Elsa from Frozen in the quarter final. In the semi final, Mulan beat Moana.
The other Disney princesses in the tournament were: Snow White, Aurora from Sleeping Beauty, Ariel from The Little Mermaid, Anna from Frozen, Tiana from The Princess and the Frog, Merida from Brave, Pocahontas and Raya from Raya and the Last Dragon.
Fans react
As always with these things, the result hasn’t done down well with everyone. One commenter on Instagram said: “Over Mulan who literally fought a war?” and another said: “Mulan literally saved China! Rapunzel’s biggest enemy was spit ends!”
Another poster opened up another potential can of worms: “Hot take, Tangled was a better movie than Frozen.”
Now that is an argument starter. Maybe it could be a ‘You Decide’ in the future.
