Awards season is in full swing, with the Oscar nominations out today.

But amid the backslapping and rewarding of the best, the Golden Raspberry Awards – or Razzies – are back with their tongue-in-cheek celebration of what they claim is the worst films and performances of 2023.

Nominations are led – if that is the right word – by The Expend4ables (which should win just for that title). The film, the fourth in the franchise, has seven nominations, including for Sylvester Stallone as worst supporting actor, and Megan Fox for worst supporting actress.

Fox is also nominated in the worst actress category for her performance in another film, Johnny & Clyde. She is the only actor nominated for two different films in this year’s awards.

Meanwhile, Stallone is a veteran of the Razzies – this is his 16th nomination in all.

Other films to feature heavily in the nominations are The Exorcist: Believer and Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey – the latter taking advantage of copyright lapsing to reimagine the characters of 100 Acre Wood as serial killers.

It was a bad year for exorcism-based films as Russell Crowe is nominated in the worst actor category for playing Father Gabriele Amorth in The Pope’s Exorcist.

The Razzies, which are voted for by an international panel of more than 1,000 members of the Golden Raspberry Foundation, are an annual antidote to the Oscars, and the nominations and ceremony are held the day before the more established ceremony.

There are nine categories in the awards, including worst film, worst director and worst prequel/remake/rip-off/sequel. Some stars have even been known to collect their awards in person at the Razzies ceremony.

Other films nominated include Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny – the fifth instalment of the franchise – in the worst sequel category. Ant Man & the Wasp: Quantumania also has four nominations.

Some big stars are also up for awards, including in the worst actor category where Vin Diesel – for Fast X – and Chris Evans for Ghosted.
