Is there nothing that Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively cannot do? The Hollywood couple, not content with appearing in a string of hit movies, have now completed something not seen since the turn of the 1990s.

Rare achievement

The couple are stars of the two biggest grossing films in the US currently – Reynolds in Deadpool and Wolverine and Lively in It Ends With Us. They are the first married couple to achieve this since Demi Moore and Bruce Willis did it way back in July 1990.

Lively’s drama It Ends With US opened on August 9, and took $50 million over its first weekend, making it the second most popular film in the US, just $4 million behind the number one film Deadpool and Wolverine.

While there are plenty of Hollywood couples out there – and have been over the years – it is rare for both to appear in separate big films at the same time. When Moore and Willis achieved the feat, the former was in romantic drama Ghost, with the latter in action sequel Die Hard 2.

Box office bragging rights

While Reynolds can claim the box office bragging rights in his household, Lively can point to the fact that It Ends With Us is in fewer theaters in the US than Deadpool and Wolverine – 3,611 to 4,330.

Deadpool and Wolverine has been a huge hit this summer and has just become the second film in 2024 to gross more than $1 billion at the global box office – although it is still some way behind the top film, Pixar’s Inside Out 2.

It Ends With Us has started well and could well end up as one of the biggest grossing films of the year too.
