Thank goodness this wasn’t a rumor! On February 6, Sarah Michelle Gellar confirmed a Buffy reboot on her Instagram. The beloved actress shared a photo of her iconic 90s character Buffy Summers and explained the process behind the reboot.

A 90s hit

Gellar was the star of the hit WB show Buffy The Vampire Slayer which ran from 1997 to 2003 on the network. The cult classic made her a star, leading to roles in blockbusters such as Scooby Doo 1 and 2 and Cruel Intentions. The show was created by Joss Whedon, who will not be involved in the reboot. Whedon has faced controversy in recent years with actors on his projects alleging he created a toxic workplace. The Buffy set was unfortunately included in this list of projects.

Regardless, a reboot with Gellar is going to be epic. For years, the actress shut down a Buffy reboot. In 2021, to Entertainment Weekly she said she was “way too tired and cranky to put in that work again” for a reboot. Meanwhile, behind the scenes, she was meeting with a team to create one. Sneaky Gellar, very sneaky.

Confirming the reboot, Gellar’s lengthy Instagram post explains the process of her meeting with the people involved. Also, the actress pledged to Buffy fans that she and the team would get the new show “right”. This comes after many original fans of the show expressed concern online about the Buffyverse being ruined. Hesitancy towards reboots is normal, with shows like Gossip Girl producing terrible reboots that only last a season or two.

Since the Buffy reboot is confirmed, we will explore how it came to be, and what Gellar said about it in her post. Read on to find out all the details.

Gellar confirmed the existence of the reboot, which was reported in early February 2025. The actress cheekily hinted at it a few days ago, posting a photo on her Instagram wearing sushi pajamas. If you don’t remember the “yummy sushi pajamas” bit, you aren’t a true Buffy fan!

All the comments on the photo were filled with references to Buffy’s yummy sushi PJs, and fans were right about the subliminal message behind them.

Now, below you can read Gellar’s Instagram post confirming the Buffy reboot.

Her statement

Gellar begins by confirming the rumors and moving into a statement to explain why she decided to reboot the show. The actress begins, “Three years ago, I got a call from my dear friend and mentor, Gail Berman. She told me that she wanted me to sit down with Chloé Zhao to hear her take on a potential Buffy revival. I was blown away that Chloé even knew who I was, but, as I’ve always done, I told Gail that I just didn’t see a way for the show to exist again.”

Changing her mind

She says she met with Zhao, a Chinese director because there was “something different in her voice”. Zhao directed Marvel’s Eternals and the upcoming historical film Hamnet, which focuses on the life of William Shakespeare’s wife Agnes, real name Anne.

The I Know What You Did Last Summer star met with Zhao for a coffee which turned into an emotional “four-hour adventure”.

Reboot conversations

In the post, Gellar says these conversations with Zhao slowly swayed her towards a reboot. She says she never agreed to anything but was surprised she was “agreeing to continue the conversation”. Eventually, these conversations transformed into assembling a team. Nora and Lilla Zuckerman were added as showrunners for the Buffy reboot, and the group talked through and “settled on an idea.”

A promise to the fans

Gellar’s dedication and admiration towards Buffy The Vampire Slayer and her character have always been admired by fans. In the second half of the post, the actress talks about the fans and their reaction.

She said: “I have always listened to the fans and heard your desire to revisit Buffy and her world, but it was not something I could do unless I was sure we would get it right. This has been a long process, and it’s not over yet. I promise you, we will only make this show if we know we can do it right. And I will tell you that we are on the path there.”

The statement serves to comfort Buffy fans, as many fans thought the show had a perfect ending. It was incredibly sad, but also poetic.

She concluded the post, “I feel so lucky to be on this journey with these four unbelievably talented women, all of whom love Buffy as much as I do. And as much as you do. Thank you to all the fans who never stopped asking for this. This will be for you.”

We love you, Buffy Summers!

How did fans react to the Buffy reboot?

If you remember Buffy’s leopard print dress, leather jacket, and knee-high boots, then you’re a real one. Also, please bring back vamps with bleach-blond hair and atrociously nineties leather coats.

Lastly, another Buffy fan joked that the Buffy reboot coming back now was “so on-brand”. We have to agree, although during a world health apocalypse (during COVID-19) would’ve worked better, Buffy.
