With production on Scream 7 set to start imminently and with new and returning stars lined up to appear in the long-running horror series, here is all we know on it.

Back to basics

Perhaps the biggest news concerning Scream 7 is that the focus will be on Sydney Prescott once again. Sydney, played by Neve Campbell, was central to the original Scream film and its first three sequels. However, in the 2022 reboot she was a relatively minor character, and didn’t appear at all in Scream 6 – although this was down to a contract dispute that Campbell had.

But that dispute is in the past and Campbell jumped at the chance to reprise her role as the iconic survivor.

Also returning to the franchise is its creator, Kevin Williamson. He wrote the script for Scream, and directed Scream 2 and 4 and is back in the director’s chair for this one. Guy Busick, who has written the past two Scream films, is again penning the script.

Other stars

Casting details have been scant so far, but it has been reported by The Hollywood Reporter that Isabel May – best known for her roles in Yellowstone prequels 1883 and 1923 – is in talks to play Sydney’s daughter.

It was also reported earlier in the year that Courtney Cox, who has played TV reporter Gail Weathers in all six Scream films – and is the only character to do so – was also in talks to return, but this has yet to be confirmed. However, she is known to be “excited” that Williamson is back on board.

Who isn’t returning?

The Scream franchise needed Sydney to return, as the stars of the past two films, Melissa Berrera and Jenna Ortega, have both exited the franchise. Barrera was fired last year after she made controversial posts on social media regarding the Israel-Hamas war. Ortega also exited last year, although the reasons for that are unclear.

What’s the plot?

Details of the plot – other than it will focus on Sydney Prescott and her daughter – have so far been thin on the ground. However, it will probably follow the same lines of the previous six films, with Sydney and others being chased around by Ghostface for most of the film.

When will Scream 7 be released?

Production is set to start in December. The movie is set to hit theaters on February 27, 2026.
