There’s only one thing to do on December 26: cosy up on the sofa to watch a Christmas movie.
And – if you can keep your eyes open after eating all that turkey yesterday! – there are certainly plenty to choose from.
From Home Alone to Elf, or How the Grinch Stole Christmas to The Muppet Christmas Carol, there really is something for everyone to enjoy this festive season.
But what will the stars be tuning in to watch today? Read on to find out the favorite Christmas movies of six celebrities…
Greta Gerwig

For Greta Gerwig, the old movies are the best.
The Barbie director, 41, revealed that the 1947 original version of Miracle on 34th Street became a favorite when she was growing up in Southern California.
“I associate it with childhood,” Gerwig said. “There was a movie theater in my hometown that would play it, called The Crest, around the holidays. I associate it with being a kid, and it felt magical.”
Luca Guadagnino
In stark contrast, fellow filmmaker Luca Guadagnino prefers something a bit sillier.
The Challengers director, 53, is a big fan of The Muppet Christmas Carol.
“I think Dickens plus Kermit is impossibly great,” Guadagnino admitted. “And Michael Caine, of course. I love the Muppets so much. I always think of myself as one of the two old men on the balcony.”
Zooey Deschanel

Despite starring in her own Christmas movie, Zooey Deschanel didn’t choose Elf as her favorite holiday film.
“I like Meet Me in St. Louis,” Deschanel, 44, said of the 1944 musical starring Judy Garland. “It’s not all Christmas, but [it has] the themes of home and family and those are deep, holiday themes to me.”
Kerry Washington
But no fear, as Elf is a firm favorite with Kerry Washington!
The actor, 47, revealed she loves the Christmas movie, which stars Will Ferrell.
“We watch the movie Elf once a year,” Washington wrote on Twitter/X. “And every single year I’m like: WHY DONT I WATCH THIS ALL YEAR LONG?! It just makes me so happy. Belly laughs every viewing. Merry and Happy!!!!”
Christine Baranski

Although Mamma Mia was filmed on the sandy shores of the Greek islands of Skopelos and Skiathos, Christine Baranski is longing for snow – and her favorite Christmas movie is White Christmas.
“That movie gets to me every time!” Baranski said of the 1954 film. “And I think that’s the power of a Christmas movie, it can have the power to go straight to your heart.”
Emma Roberts
And for some actors, holiday viewing is a way to scout out potential roles.
Emma Roberts admitted that she would have loved a part in her top Christmas film – Just Friends.
Revealing that it’s one of her “holiday must movies”, Roberts, 33, shrugged, “I want to be in a Christmas movie so bad. I think that would be so much fun to film a Christmas movie.”
