Chloe Fineman has revealed that she is the Saturday Night Live cast member who Elon Musk made cry during his appearance as host in 2021.
Fineman, posting in a now-deleted TikTok video, explained that she had written a script for the Tesla CEO, which she had “stayed up all night” writing, only for Musk to grimly tell her that it wasn’t funny and that it didn’t make him laugh.
There had been a mystery surrounding the cast member who had been made to cry by a host for a few months, after Fineman’s SNL co-star Bowen Yang revealed on the ‘Watch What Happens Live’ podcast in August that a male host had reduced someone to tears because he hated their sketches.
Speaking at the time, Yang said, “This man who…this person, this host made multiple cast members cry on Wednesday during the, before the table-read, because he hated the ideas,” and later labeled the experience as “terrible”.
Now, three months later, Fineman has come out and publicly revealed herself to be the cast member and Musk to be the host in question. The revelation comes off the back of Dana Harvey parodying Musk on the latest episode of SNL, the first show since Musk-backed Donald Trump won the US Presidential election for the second time.
Responding to Musk’s criticism of the show (following on from Liam Gallagher also being unimpressed by an impression of him and brother Noel, recently) and of Carvey’s impersonation of him, in which the billionaire said that SNL had been “dying slowly for years, as they become increasingly out of touch with reality.” Fineman said, “OK, I just saw some news article about Elon Musk being like butt-hurt about ‘SNL’ and his impression, but I’m, like, you’re clearly watching the show. Like, what are you talking about?”
The SNL star then went onto say, “And I’m like, you know what? I’m gonna come out and say at long last that I’m the cast member that he made cry. And he’s the host that made someone cry. Maybe there’s others.
“I was like, I’m not gonna say anything. But I’m like, no, if you’re gonna go on your platform and be rude, like, guess what? You made I, Chloe Fineman, burst into tears because I stayed up all night writing the sketch. I was so excited, I came in, I asked if you had any questions and you stared at me like you were firing me from Tesla and were like, ‘It’s not funny.’“
Fineman continued, “I waited for you to be like, ‘Ha ha, jk.’ No. Then you started pawing through my script, like flipping each page, being, like, ‘I didn’t laugh once, not one time.’”
The sketch in question was not named by Fineman, who said it turned out well in the end and that “I actually had a really good time, and I thought you were really funny in it,” although Musk’s reaction to the Dana Carvey sketch at the weekend and his subsequent reaction to Fineman’s revelation probably shouldn’t give anyone any hope for a reunion show anywhere down the line. Not that anyone would have likely been clamouring for such a thing, anyway.
Responding on X, the social platform that he owns, Musk replied, “Frankly, it was only on the Thursday before the Saturday that ANY of the sketches generated laughs. I was worried. I was like damn my SNL appearance is going to be so f**king unfunny that it will make a crackhead sober!! But then it worked out in the end.”
