- Sony unveiled the Future Immersive Entertainment Concept at CES 2025
- Immersive gaming involves audio, scent and atmospherics
- Tech is still years away from being publicly available

Gaming has become steadily more immersive over the years, but now Sony has unveiled a concept where you can not just see and hear the baddies but smell them too.
The Future Immersive Entertainment Concept was unveiled by Sony at major tech event CES 2025 in Las Vegas. In essence, players enter a giant cube, not unlike multi-person virtual reality experiences that can currently be enjoyed. However, in this concept, players step into a space where they are surrounded by high-definition screens, giving the feeling the player is in the game world as the game.
Sony concept
In addition to the visuals, there is “engaging audio” as well as smells and other atmospherics. Players – who were playing a demo of The Last of Us – were also given imitation weapons to shoot at enemies, rather than a traditional gamepad.
However, before fans get too excited, this is just a concept from Sony, so it will be years before it will be publicly available – if indeed it ever comes to market. Sony has yet to reveals its full plans for the technology.
Using smells in games
But Sony isn’t the first company to explore the possibility of using smells as a way to enhance the gaming experience. Last year, GameScent launched a product that uses artificial intelligence to release a smell in real time that is coordinated with the gameplay on screen.
This meant that smells such as forests, storms, gunshots and racing cars can be smelt by gamers. The makers added that there is a neutralizer that can be used after a gaming session which means that the smells created won’t linger for hours afterwards.
Meanwhile for fans of The Last of Us, while Sony used part of the game in its demo, it isn’t a sign that a new game is incoming. However, season two of the TV show will be shown this spring. Here is all we know about season two of The Last of Us.
