Whether you’re a fan of the show or not, odds are you’re familiar with that evil Squid Game doll.

Affectionately named Young-hee, this giant robotic menace is anything but kind. Despite looking like a harmless child, she’s actually a cold blooded killer.

The role of this sinister Squid Game doll is made extra weird considering the inspiration behind its look. It’s something that was recently revealed by the show’s production designer.

Young-hee first appeared in the first episode of the show’s first season. Our hero Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) meets her after agreeing to take part in the Squid Game, a deadly series of challenges where players stand to win a life-changing sum of money – if they can survive.

The first game is called Red Light, Green Light and invites players to make their way across a playground to the finish line. The catch? They can’t move whenever Young-hee is watching them. If they do, their time in the game – and their life – is over.

After her infamous first appearance, Gi-hun crossed paths with Young-hee again in Squid Game season 2. What’s more, she’s set to be joined by a new robotic pal in Squid Game season 3.

Young-hi’s boyfriend Chul-su was teased in early 2025 but we don’t know what evil he has planned just yet…

Inspiration behind Squid Game doll design

According to reports, Squid Game’s production designer Chae Kyoung-sun took inspiration from her own daughter when coming up with Young-hee’s look.

“I designed a short fringe above her eyebrows and my daughter had a bowl cut for a long time which was very cute,” explained Kyoung-sun.

“The most important thing was the facial expression. I tried to make the nose, mouth and cheekbones look cute but at the same time I wanted the eyes to have a certain madness and show the moving eyeballs to work as a killer doll.”

Well, it certainly worked.

Squid Game season 3 will debut on 27 June 2025 on Netflix worldwide.

This new batch of episodes will round out Gi-hun’s story and was filmed back-to-back with Squid Game season 2.

At this time, it’s unclear how many episodes Squid Game season 3 will have. Squid Game season 2 consisted of seven instalments, each of which were roughly an hour in length.
