The upcoming live-action Masters of the Universe movie will be quite different to the classic 80s cartoon series, the star playing He-Man has revealed.

Nicholas Galitzine, who will be playing He-Man in the upcoming Amazon-produced movie, said that the makers will be taking a different approach.

The new film will focus on Prince Adam, who crashes to Earth in a spaceship as a child and gets separated from his magical Power Sword – which is also the only link to his home on Eternia.

But, after spending the best part of 20 years tracking it down, Prince Adam is taken back across space to defend Eternia from the evil forces of Skeletor. But to defeat him, Prince Adam must uncover the mysteries of his past and become He-Man.

Not like the original He-Man

Talking to the Hollywood Reporter, Galitzine said that, while he had been watching the classic Masters of the Universe cartoon from the 1980s to prepare for his role as He-Man, fans should not expect the camp charm of the original. “Our version is quite different from the original animation, which we all agree was camp within its own right and worked so well for the time,” he said.

“But there’s been a couple of iterations, obviously, since there was the Revelation version of Masters of the Universe, and the comics themselves. And we’re very much treating our script as Bible, you know.”

New audience

While Galitzine is aware of the existing fanbase for He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, he hopes it will also bring in a new audience. “[Masters of the Universe] was really formative for a lot of people, so it’s exciting to do something that will have a nostalgia element as well as hopefully attract a bunch of new fans.”

Galitzine is part of a stellar cast for the film, which also includes Alison Brie as Evil-Lyn, Jared Leto as Skeletor and Idris Elba as Man-At-Arms. Here is all we know about the upcoming Masters of the Universe movie.
