The duo previously worked on The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance, a puppet-filled legacy sequel series that continued the story of Jim Henson and Frank Oz’s 1982 film The Dark Crystal.
Described as a “supernatural thriller,” production on The Boroughs is starting to take shape. Stars have joined its cast, with details of its plot making its way online.
Below, you’ll find all the information we have so far on the Duffer brothers’ latest offering…
Does the Duffer Brothers’ new show have a release date?

No, unfortunately, the Duffer brothers’ new show The Boroughs doesn’t have a release date.
With production well underway on Stranger Things season five, it’s likely that the Duffers’ main series will have to bow out before we get to see their next project hit Netflix.
That said, we do know that The Boroughs will consist of eight episodes although run times for each are unknown. Sex Education’s Ben Taylor will direct the pilot episode alongside multiple other instalments while also acting as an Executive Producer.
The show will be produced under the Duffers’ company Upside Down Pictures. The same production house is also producing a number of Stranger Things spin-offs. These include an animated series and the recently released Stranger Things stage show.
What is the Stranger Things creators’ new show about?
The Boroughs has a logline that’s just detailed and cryptic enough to whet the appetite for things to come.
“In a seemingly picturesque retirement community in the New Mexico desert, a group of unlikely heroes must band together to stop an otherworldly threat from stealing the one thing they don’t have… time.”
From the sounds of it, The Boroughs will switch Stranger Things’ child protagonists for older people. The concept was intriguing enough to capture the Duffers’ attention though. The Stranger Things masterminds called it “very special” and “scary, funny and deeply touching.”

“We’ve been fans of Jeff and Will’s writing for a long time, and when they pitched us their idea for ‘The Boroughs,’ we immediately knew they had something very special on their hands,” explained the Duffers.
“While the heroes in ‘The Boroughs’ have a few more years on them than the kids from ‘Stranger Things,’ they are a similarly lovable bunch of misfits, and we can’t wait for you to join them on an adventure that is at turns scary, funny, and deeply touching.”
Likewise, Addiss and Matthews were equally happy to be working with the Duffers and returning to Netflix, the same platform that housed their Dark Crystal spin-off.
“We’re thrilled to be back at Netflix,” said the show co-creators.
“Working alongside the Duffer Brothers (who are pretty good at making shows) and their team has been a dream come true. They bring the perfect balance of heart and horror to our story. We can’t wait for audiences around the world to unlock the dark mystery buried beneath the sunny facade of ‘The Boroughs.’”
Who is starring in The Boroughs?

The first castmembers for The Boroughs were announced in September 2024 with a starry bunch of names boarding the show.
Spider-Man: No Way Home star Alfred Molina will play Sam, with The Fly’s Geena Davis playing Renee. Together, they’ll be joined by Luke Cage star Alfre Woodward as Judy, American Horror Story’s Denis O’Hare as Wally, Independence Day’s Bill Pullman as Jack and Da 5 Bloods’ Clarke Peters as Art.

Next, Love Lies Bleeding’s Jena Malone joined the cast as Claire. Station 19’s Carols Miranda will play Paz and Under The Banner of Heaven’s Seth Numrich will play Blaine. The Sinner’s Alice Kremelberg also joined as Anneliese.
In late November, six more names were added to the cast but their characters remain a mystery for now.
These include Malcolm in the Middle’s Jane Kaczmarek, E.T: The Extra-Terrestrial’s Dee Wallace, Young Sheldon’s Ed Begley Jr., Loki’s Rafael Casal, Twin Peaks: The Return star Eric Edelstein and American Gods’ Mousa Hussein Kraish.
