Classic endless runner game Subway Surfers has been named as the ‘greatest nostalgic mobile game’ by Pubity fans.
Subway Surfers, which was released in 2012, won the final of the ‘You Decide’ tournament, beating Temple Run by 56% to 44%.
Pubity’s ‘You Decide’ tournaments are run in a knockout format, with, in this case, mobile games facing off against each other in polls, with the winner advancing until only one remains.
Subway Surfers beat a range of games on its way to the final, defeating Paper Toss in the first round, Angry Birds in the quarter-finals and the notorious Flappy Bird in the semi-final. Meanwhile Temple Run beat Where’s My Water in the first round, followed by Fruit Ninja in the quarter-finals and Jetpack Joyride in the semis.
Other classic games that fell by the wayside included Geometry Dash, Doodle Jump, Hill Climb Racing, Talking Tom, Clash of Clans, Candy Crush Saga, Asphalt 6 and Shadow Gun.
Subway Surfers was co-developed by Danish companies Kiloo and SYBO Games, and was released on Android, iOS, Harmony OS, Amazon Fire Tablet and Windows Phone platforms. The gameplay is simple, following the template for endless runner games of running through an environment, avoiding obstacles and grabbing coins and power-ups. The game ends when the player hits an obstacle or gets caught by an inspector.
Players started as Jake, a young graffiti artist – although there were other characters that could be played – who, on being discovered tagging a subway train, runs away from the police, through the railroad tracks.
The game has been downloaded more than 2.7 billion times, and was named as the most downloaded game from 2012-19.
There will be more ‘You Decide’ tournaments on Pubity’s Instagram feed in the coming weeks and months on a variety of topics. Let us know in the comments what you would like to see next!
