The Black Phone 2, a sequel to the 2022 film, will be released in October 2025. The horror film stars Mason Thames as Finney Blake, a 13-year-old held in a soundproof basement by The Grabber (Ethan Hawke).

He discovers a disconnected phone on the wall allowing him to hear the voices of the killer’s previous victims. The voices are trying to help Finney escape from the basement. The film will once again be directed by Scott Derrickson after the success of the first film.

In 2022, Derrickson had teased that he had spoken about making a sequel to the first film which was based on a book by the author Joe Hill. He said: “Joe Hill pitched me a wonderful idea for a sequel to The Black Phone that, if this movie does well, I’m gonna do it. He’s got a great idea, I really liked it.”

The first film did well in terms of its box office revenue. It made $161 million worldwide. The announcement came in November 2023 that cast members from the first film would return. Filming began in November 2024 and ended in late January 2025, setting the film up for a release later this year.

With a new sequel on the way, there is some buzz among fans of the first film concerning The Black Phone 2. Here is everything we know about it.

When is The Black Phone 2 released?

The Black Phone 2 will be released on 17 October worldwide. The original release date was June 27. It will be released by Blumhouse and distributed by Universal Pictures.

Who is in The Black Phone 2 cast?

Deadline reported in November 2023 that Hawke and the original cast would return for the sequel. Alongside Hawke reprising his role as the terrifying Grabber, we also have Thames as Finney. Miguel Mora is back as Robin and Madeline McGraw returns as Gwen.

Jeremy Davies will play Terrance once more. Demián Bichir and Arianna Rivas have also joined the cast.

In addition, screenwriter C. Robert Cargill returns to write the sequel.

What is the plot of The Black Phone sequel?

Not many specifics are known about the plot of The Black Phone 2. However, Derrickson did divulge some details when speaking to Screen Rant. He revealed that the movie would focus on many of the characters in high school since they would’ve aged up.

He said: “I realized that if I made a big movie after Black Phone, which was The Gorge, by the time I was ready to shoot another film, all those kids would’ve been in high school. So, it’s basically a high school coming-of-age movie in the same way that the first movie was a middle school coming-of-age film.”

Age aside, the end of the first film leaves some details for a sequel already set. Like The Grabber, for instance. We won’t spoil it, but if you’ve seen it you understand. Since Hawke is returning, the Grabber will play a role in The Black Phone 2 although we don’t know how yet.

It could be like a Scream situation with a new killer in the second movie. Alternatively, The Grabber coming back for revenge on Finney, or a family member, maybe? Mrs Loomis did it in Scream 2!

Is there a trailer?

At the time of writing, there is no trailer for The Black Phone 2. The first Black Phone had its trailer debut in October 2021 and the movie was released in June 2022. Since filming for The Black Phone 2 just finished, it may take a while to cut a trailer together. However, we could expect one in the next few months considering the film will release in October 2025.

Stay tuned for any updates on The Black Phone 2.
