  • Remake of the 1994 cult classic has been panned by critics
  • Bill Skarsgård stars as the undead musician, previously played by the late Brandon Lee
  • Lee was killed on-set while filming the original

So it turns out developmental hell may have been the best place for The Crow remake, after early reviews came in for Rupert Sanders’ remake of the gothic revenge cult classic. Spoiler Alert: They’re bad. Really, really bad.

At the time of writing, with over 20 reviews collated, the Bill Skarsgård and FKA Twigs led remake has only managed an average score of 13%, which critics and viewers alike taking turns to pan the film on social media, also.

The original Crow film, released 30 years ago, went onto become a cult classic, although its production was tragically overshadowed after a gun malfunction on set caused Lee to be fatally wounded.

Sanders’ reimagining of the ’94 classic has some way to go if it is to be as nostalgically fawned over in the same manner, given that the original currently has an 86% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

So just what are the viewing public saying about this 2024 reawakening for the Eric Draven character? Can it really be that bad? Is it going to be battling it out with Borderlands for the Golden Raspberry Awards next year?

The Crow was originally directed by Alex Proyas and was based on the 1989 comic book series by James O’Barr. In the original, musician Eric Draven is resurrected by a crow in the afterlife and returns to seek vengeance on those who murdered him and his fiance. The film would eventually spin out three sequels, although they were all universally panned by critics, so at least the latest iteration is maintaining that tradition.
