The Devil Wears Prada is a beloved cult classic for fashion lovers, and it’s getting a sequel. The news broke in July 2024, much to the delight of fans. Disney will head The Devil Wears Prada sequel. The 2006 film is based on the juicy novel by Lauren Weisberger. The film follows aspiring journalist Andy Sachs (Anne Hathaway) as she gets a job at a prestigious fashion magazine, Runway, run by the drag lady boss Miranda Priestly (Meryl Streep).

The movie was a sensation back in the day with its stellar cast, which included Emily Blunt as Emily Charlton and Stanley Tucci as Nigel Kipling. It was a box office smash hit, earning $362 million worldwide. It was also nominated for two Oscars and helped launch the careers of Hathaway and Blunt in Hollywood. Previously Anne Hathaway had mainstream success with The Princess Diaries movies, although TDWP helped to establish her as an actress.

It’s no surprise that a sequel is on the way since fans continue to love the movie almost two decades later. It is so popular there is a musical production in London that debuted last year, with Ugly Betty’s Vanessa Williams playing the Runway editor-in-chief.

Gird your loins and sit tight, because there is a lot to unpack about The Devil Wear’s Prada sequel.

What is The Devil Wears Prada sequel about?

According to IMDB, the sequel will focus on Priestly as she struggles against her former assistant, who has become a rival executive. The two will compete for advertising revenue amid declining print media, all while she approaches retirement.

Similarly, Deadline reported in July that the sequel will center on Priestly. The storyline will follow the retired fashion icon as she navigates her career in an era where print media is fading. They also reveal that Priestly’s former assistant will serve as her main nemesis. Yikes!

As much as audiences are excited to see the former assistant return, this plot isn’t quite what fans imagined. That said, a redemption arc is long overdue —she was done dirty in the original film!

What is the sequel called?

The sequel doesn’t officially have a name yet. It is being referred to as The Devil Wears Prada 2 for now.

No major cast members have been confirmed for the sequel yet, despite fans hoping for the return of Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt, and Meryl Streep. The trio played a significant role in popularizing the female-led movie, making their potential comeback highly anticipated.

However, there is some promising news. In July, Entertainment Weekly reported that Hathaway, Streep, Blunt, and Tucci were “in talks” to reprise their roles. Meanwhile, Puck News, which broke the news about the sequel, claimed that only Blunt and Streep are set to return. This would make sense, given that the rumored plot focuses heavily on these two characters.

As of now, none of the original cast have confirmed their involvement in the sequel. Disney also hasn’t divulged any details officially about the cast. However, reports suggest that the original screenwriter, Aline Brosh McKenna, is returning to write the screenplay.

What has the cast said about returning?

Hathaway, the lead of The Devil Wears Prada, doesn’t seem too optimistic about a sequel. At The Idea of You premiere, she shared her thoughts, saying, “From us I wouldn’t hold out too much hope.” Oh, heartbreak!

Hathaway had already shut down the idea back in 2022, bluntly stating, “It’s not gonna happen.” Still, she remains close with her co-stars. In 2024, she reunited with Streep and Blunt at the SAG Awards—a reunion that fans appreciate, even if it’s not on screen.

Meryl Streep’s return

As for our big bad played by Streep, there’s a glimmer of hope. In July, Streep posted a cryptic photo on Instagram hinting at her return as Miranda Priestly. She captioned it, “Miranda will return,” adding a heart emoji alongside a picture of the original dragon lady. That’s the kind of tease fans live for!

In September, Blunt kept things vague when asked about her possible return in The Devil Wears Prada sequel. Speaking to PEOPLE magazine, she didn’t reveal any details. When the reporter brought up the sequel, she jokingly replied, “What sequel?” before dramatically adding that she “couldn’t tell them anything.”

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter at The Red Sea Film Festival in December she said, “There are rumblings. There is stuff churning around. But I don’t know if I can confirm anything. But we would all be delighted.”

This week, Tucci also weighed in on the potential sequel. He became one of the first cast members to acknowledge its existence. In an interview with Variety, The Conclave star said he’d be “happy” to return. However, like Blunt, he kept the details under wraps, admitting he couldn’t share anything yet. Tucci also reflected fondly on the original film, calling it “one of the best experiences ever.”

When will The Devil Wears Prada sequel be released?

No official release date has been announced for The Devil Wears Prada sequel, but reports suggest filming starts this November. If that timeline holds, fans could expect the movie to hit theaters in late 2026 or 2027. It’s a bit of a wait, but in the meantime, you can rewatch the original on Disney+ and relive all the iconic fashion and drama!
