The Penguin season 2 is on the way.

After its first season dropped earlier this year, the show wasted no time grabbing people’s attention. Soon afterwards, the show became award-nominated. In fact, it even made history as the first DC-related series to receive Golden Globes nods

Lead star Colin Farrell was nominated for Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Limited Series, Anthology Series or a Motion Picture Made for Television with Sofia Falcone star Cristin Milioti nominated for the same award.

Meanwhile, the show itself was nominated for Best Television Limited Series, Anthology Series or Motion Picture Made for Television.

Farrell took home his award at the ceremony in early 2025, all but guaranteeing that The Penguin season 2 will have to up the ante.

The finale of The Penguin, while shocking, has left the door open to continue Oz Cobb’s story. But it has also set up plotlines for The Batman: Part II, which is coming to theaters in 2026.

Originally, The Penguin was conceived as an eight-episode show to act as a bridge between The Batman and The Batman Part II. But such has been the show’s success, then it has inevitably led to questions about another season being made.

So could another season happen? Here’s what we know.

Is The Penguin season 2 happening?

Yes, The Penguin season 2 is on the way – according to director Matt Reeves at least. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter at the Golden Globes, Reeves confirmed that more episodes were indeed in the works.

“We are talking about doing another season,” explained Reeves.

“It’s really about coming up with the right idea and also about the timing. We’re doing The Batman Part 2 and how all that fits together but we’re really excited about doing another season and we just have to figure out exactly the right idea.”

Colin Farrell is up for it

Actor Colin Farrell, who plays The Penguin with such menace, has indicated in interviews that he is open to reprising his role again.

Initially Farrell seemed to be done with the character, telling Total Film he never wanted to put on the suit and head again – it took three hours to put his prosthetics on – after filming had wrapped.

However, since the show dropped and garnered such ratings and praise, Farrell’s stance has softened. He told The Hollywood Reporter that “if there’s a great idea and the writing was really muscular and as strong or stronger on the page than it was the first season, of course I would do it,” he said.

What’s more, his recent Golden Globe win is sure to pique his interest in the role for a long time to come.

Script strength

Showrunner Lauren LeFranc has also said she would consider returning for a second season. She has also echoed Farrell’s sentiment that the strength of the scripts would be a determiner. Speaking to The Direct, she said: “In order to do a second season, we have to feel like we can top ourselves.”

Who might return for The Penguin season 2

Farrell has indicated his willingness to return, and there are several cast members who could also return. Sofia Falcone (Cristin Milioti) is one, as is Julian Rush (Theo Rossi).

Although many other characters were killed off in the first season, so a new roster of supporting characters would be needed.

Following her Golden Globes nomination, Variety spoke to Miloti about Sofia Falcone’s future.

“I think there’s a myriad of possibilities of where she could go, especially given how her story ended at the end of the season,” she told the outlet.

“With the brain of Lauren LeFranc, it could go into so many different exciting territories, but I think just to get to explore her psyche more and to see her exact revenge on Oswald … I would love nothing more.”

Potential plotlines

Any plot for the second season would depend on what happens in The Batman: Part II. It has already been confirmed that The Penguin will be in it, but how big his influence will be isn’t clear yet.

However, a second season would likely include The Penguin’s battle to stay on top in the Gotham underworld. As we know from gangster-based movies and shows of the past, getting to the top is one thing, staying there is another.

Long wait

Even if a second season of The Penguin is greenlit, we would likely have to wait a long time to see it. Firstly, it would have to be after The Batman: Part II is released, due to the plotlines. The Batman: Part II won’t be coming out until 2026. Then add in time to write scripts, film and produce the show etc and it could be 2027 at the earliest that a new season drops.
