It’s safe to say that, ahead of the upcoming US Presidential election, not many of us predicted that one of the most prominent names involved in presenting stories from both sides of the aisle would be comedian Theo Von.
But here we are, with Von interviewing both Vermont senator Bernie Sanders and Republican candidate Donald Trump within the space of a few weeks on his This Past Weekend podcast.
Von has made a point of featuring people from all corners of political, religious and social spectrums in his podcast, including hosting Egyptian comedian, author and political commentator Bassem Youssef and Rabbi David Wolpe to discuss the war in Gaza, recently.
Trump revealed early in the interview with Von that his son Barron put him onto the comedian and encouraged him to appear on the podcast, while Von told the former President that he would also love to host Trump’s presidential opponent Kamala Harris.
And while the pair discussed the upcoming election, the one clip that has caught people’s attention the most is Von talking to Trump about cocaine use.
Von explains to Trump about how he avoids alcohol because it will make him want to start using cocaine again, but when Trump enquires further about the feeling that comes with taking the drug, Von responded in typically colourful and unique fashion.
“It started to make me feel like I was a mechanic or something,” Von begins, before Trump asks him if cocaine is a stronger high than alcohol, “oh yeah, cocaine will turn you into a damn owl, homie. You’ll be out on your own porch. You’ll be your own street lamp.”
The clip rapidly began to do the rounds on social media, racking up millions of views across X, Instagram and TikTok. One poster on X captioned the video “I can’t believe @TheoVon just said ‘cocaine will turn you into a damn owl, homie, you’ll be out on your own porch, you’ll be your own street lamp’ to a literal President of the United States” while another commented, “This is the most interested I have ever seen Trump be in another human being.”
Given the attention Von’s interviews with Trump and Sanders have received, it would not be surprising to see more political figures from both parties show up on This Past Weekend over the next few months leading into November’s election. Will we see the Kamala sit down before then, though?
