New York is the best city in the world to visit and live in, thanks to its food, culture and happiness of its residents, a recent survey has revealed.

Time Out’s latest version of its best cities list ranked the iconic city top, followed by Cape Town in South Africa, Berlin in Germany, London in the UK and Madrid in Spain rounding out the top five.

The list was based on the Time Out Index, which surveyed more than 20,000 people who live in cities across the world, as well as its own editors. Judging criteria include the quality and affordability of food, nightlife, culture and how the city makes people feel, among others.

With international travel back on the agenda for many people after the pandemic, city breaks are expected to rise in popularity, with destinations such as these likely to be at the top of many people’s lists.

The rest of the top 10 were as follows:

  • Mexico City, Mexico
  • Liverpool, UK
  • Tokyo, Japan
  • Rome, Italy
  • Porto, Portugal.

New York came out on top for many reasons. The city has many landmarks – from Central Park to the Empire State Building – as well as plenty of museums. It was also noted in the survey that many people from other cities stated that they would like to live in New York.

Cape Town ranked so highly because of the array of cultural activities on offer, including the Cape Town Art Fair, the largest of its type in Africa. Of course, there are stunning natural landmarks such as Table Mountain to be enjoyed.

Meanwhile Berlin, the capital of Germany, is known for its nightlife, green spaces and friendly people.

London was also praised for its nightlife, and just the sheer variety of things to do there.

Another capital city, Madrid, scored highly for its food, museums and the upcoming range of music concerts coming.
