Wednesday season 2 has reportedly wrapped filming, which is surely a slice of good news for fans of Tim Burton and Jenna Ortega’s take on this super spooky character.

That said, insiders have predicted that we may have quite a while to wait before we actually get to see any new episodes.

With Netflix’s hit series featuring a fair bit of digital effects and imagery, the show now faces a lengthy post-production process. In turn, this could delay the release date for Wednesday season 2, pushing it deeper into 2025.

As places like Forbes have pointed out, the first season of Wednesday wrapped filming back in late March 2022, with the show finally reaching audiences eight months later in November of the same year.

This long gap between the show’s shoot ending and the show actually airing was necessary to provide ample time to add in the show’s visual effects.

One thing we know about second series of shows is that they’re usually bigger and bolder than their first outing. This means even if Wednesday season 2 follows the same post-production schedule, we still aren’t likely to see it until July 2025 at the earliest.

If this pans out, it will mean that fans will have to wait three years to watch new episodes of Wednesday on Netflix.

These extended delays between seasons are becoming increasingly common for Netflix. Its fifth and final season of the supernatural hit Stranger Things is still in production and without an official release date.

Much like Wednesday, the show is also due to land on the streamer at some point in 2025. For context, Stranger Things’ hugely popular fourth season dropped in 2022. With season 5 set to land in 2025 (its longest gap between seasons), this would mean that the show is also asking viewers to wait quite a while between series.

These delays are important mainly due to each show’s immense popularity.

Wednesday remains Netflix’s most viewed English language show to date, with over a billion hours viewed as of 1 December 2024. Stranger Things’ latest series is in second place, with both only beaten by Squid Game, a show which has set its return for Christmas 2024 – a full four years after its 2020 original landed.

While we may have a while to wait before we can revisit Wednesday, we do know quite a bit about who will be starring in season 2.

Ortega will be back as the show’s titular terror, with Emma Myers joining her as her college roommate Enid.

Joy Sunday will return as Wednesday’s frenemy Bianca Barclay and Wednesday’s family will be back too. This includes Catherine Zeta-Jones as Morticia, Luis Guzmán as Gomez, Isaac Ordonez’s Pugsley and Fred Armisen as Uncle Fester.

Newcomers to the series include Steve Buscemi, Billie Piper, Joanna Lumley, Thandie Newton and Haley Joel Osment. Star of Barry Sonnenfeld’s 1991 The Addams Family, Christopher Lloyd, will also make an appearance.
