- Berry makes a brief appearance in the video game film
- He was meant to have a bigger part
- Some fans are wondering how this would have made the film different

Matt Berry was supposed to have a much bigger role in A Minecraft Movie – but he still snuck into the final cut regardless.
In a surprise turn of events, it turns out Berry was the first choice to play Steve. The actor – known for his roles in the likes of Toast of London and What We do In The Shadows – had even signed on for the part. However, he had to drop out due to scheduling conflicts related to the 2023 Hollywood strikes.

In the end, the part went to Jack Black. Black’s style of comedy and acting isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, and some critics weren’t such a fan of him either.
Fans were curious as to how Berry would have fared, or how different he could have made the film. Nonetheless, the eagle-eyed might be able to see him later on during the film’s mid-credits scene.
When does Matt Berry appear in the Minecraft movie?

If you want to catch a glimpse of Berry, it’s worth sticking around during the credits after the film has finished.
He plays a villager during a mid-credits scene, who turns out to be a love interest of Jennifer Coolidge’s character, Vice Principal Marlene.
The villager escapes the Overworld through a portal and enters the real world, where he encounters Marlene and they set about getting to know each other.
Villagers usually only communicate through grunts, but at one point, Berry’s villager speaks in English. It’s at that point that viewers might recognise his distinctive tone.
The story of the ‘chicken jockey’ meme

Some fans have wondered what could have happened if it had been Berry delivering the now infamous “chicken jockey” line.
The line appears in a scene where Steve, and Jason Momoa’s character, Garrett Garrison, attempt to distract the bad guys. To do this, they face off against a Minecraft chicken in a boxing ring.

It appears they just have to battle a cube-shaped chicken, but then an equally square baby zombie appears and climbs on the chicken’s back. Essentially, he’s riding the chicken like a horse, prompting Black to yell “CHICKEN JOCKEY!” Chicken jockeys are a part of the original Minecraft game.
The moment has led to some chaotic moments in theaters, with fans cheering, climbing on each other’s shoulders or even throwing popcorn when they hear “CHICKEN JOCKEY!”
