The possessed animatronic mascots are back for Five Nights at Freddy’s 2, but which members of the cast of the original film are returning for the sequel?

When Five Nights at Freddy’s proved to be a box office success when it was released in 2023, it was inevitable that a sequel would be made. Based on the popular series of video games by Scott Cawthorn, Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 has a lot of game lore that can be delved into.

Anticipation has been raised with the release of the first trailer for the sequel, which shows that the murderous animatronic characters, containing the spirits of murdered children, are very much back.

But being a sequel, some cast members are returning for Five Nights at Freddy’s 2. Here’s who (WARNING: spoilers for the first film ahead):

Mike Schmidt (played by Josh Hutcherson)

Mike is the central character to the movies. He is a young man, struggling to bring up his younger sister. After being sacked from a mall security job, he reluctantly takes the job as night security at an abandoned pizzeria – Freddy Fazbear’s Pizzeria. Horror ensues.

Mike manages to survive the first movie, including saving his sister. At the end, he is back to living his normal life.

However, he is pulled back into Freddy Fazbear’s universe for the second film by his younger sister.

Abby Schmidt (Piper Rubio)

Abby is Mike’s younger sister. In the first movie, she connects with the spirits trapped in the animatronics. Mike saves her from being killed to join the children in the spirit world.

In the sequel, Mike finds a message pinned to a door from Abby saying ‘gone to fix my friends’, by which it becomes clear it is the children in the animatronics.

Vanessa (Elizabeth Lail)

Vanessa is a local police officer, who befriends Mike and tries to help him. Later in the film, she reveals herself to be the daughter of serial killer William Afton. At the climax of the first movie she is injured, and falls into a coma.

As she returns for the sequel, we can safely assume that she has made a good recovery. In the trailer, again she is helping Mike and Abby.

William Afton (Matthew Lillard)

Afton is the evil serial killer who murdered children and hid their bodies in the animatronic suits. He also killed Mike’s younger brother Garrett.

At the end of the first movie, it is assumed he is killed in one of his own suits. But, as horror fans know, never assume that a baddie is dead. And so it proves once again here as Lillard reprises his role to wreak more havoc – although quite how is not yet clear.

New characters for Five Nights at Freddy’s 2

There are also several new characters appearing in the sequel, although their names and roles are being kept under wraps currently. Confirmed to appear so far are Mckenna Grace – best known for playing Phoebe Spengler in the two most recent Ghostbusters films – and Wayne Knight, a long established character actor who has appeared in shows such as Seinfeld and films including Jurassic Park.
