It’s currently taking the global box office by storm.
But fans will have to wait a whole year to find out what comes next in Wicked.
The movie has been split into two halves to fully tell the story, and Wicked Part 2 will hit theaters on November 21, 2025.
But although the prequel to The Wizard of Oz will once more star Tony winner Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba – aka, The Wicked Witch of the West – and Ariana Grande as Glinda the Good, followers of the story have noticed that an important cast announcement is still to come for the second instalment.
Of course, The Wizard of Oz is centered around the character of Dorothy Gale, played by Judy Garland in the 1939 movie. And as the character does feature in the latter half of Wicked, who will take on the role?
In an interview with Variety, director Jon M. Chu opened up about any casting speculation.
“The Wizard of Oz is potentially a dream,” he explained. “It’s a world where there are no real stakes. Knowing that Elphaba and Glinda live in a world of real stakes, we had to reestablish with the audience that this was real.”
Confirm we will “revisit” Dorothy and her friends in Part 2, Chu went on, “”So we dropped everyone into the crime scene, maybe the most famous crime scene ever in cinema and literature, of the iconic hat in the puddle.
“There are all these little clues before we see the full landscape of Oz. It’s this living, breathing place with real cultures, so we immediately establish this is not a dream world. After we go somewhere over the rainbow, we see that those four iconic characters exist in this real world. And we will revisit those characters in movie two.”
Okay… but what does that actually mean?
Well… we don’t exactly know yet.
With Chu reluctant to go into any details – even though the movie has already been filmed – there is still no news yet as to who will be our Dorothy.
“In the [Broadway] show, Dorothy is around,” he said. “They have to intersect, and you can only tease it so much.
“I won’t say whether she’s a character, necessarily, in movie two. There’s a part of me that wants everyone’s Dorothy to be whatever Dorothy they want. And yet, there is interaction and some crossover. So I’ll leave that up to Part Two.”

While Chu’s cryptic comments may be slightly unhelpful, there’s still plenty that we do know about Wicked Part 2 – including other cast information, and what the sequel-to-the-sequel will be about.
