Wicked was one of the biggest movies of 2024 in terms of box office revenue, so it is little surprise that it has broken records on its first week of digital release.
As reported by Variety, Universal has stated that Wicked took $26 million on its first day of release for video-on-demand in the US and Canada, and that rose to $70 million by the end of its first week.
Wicked was first made available on December 31, priced at $30 to buy and $20 to rent in original or sing-along versions.
Record takings
Universal says that Wicked’s takings in its first day and week are the largest for any Universal theatrical title. Wicked smashed the previous Universal record, which was the $44 million The Super Mario Bros movie took in 2023.
This amount is likely to keep on growing as it still has more than two months of video-on-demand exclusivity before it lands on Peacock. Then there will be video-on-demand in other territories to consider.
Wicked took $683 million at the global box office, making it the sixth biggest grossing movie of 2024. It was also the only movie in the top 10 biggest grossing films of the year to not be a sequel.
Wicked: For Good release date
Universal can look forward to more revenue from the franchise later this year when the second part of the story, Wicked: For Good, arrives in theaters on November 21.
Wicked: For Good will conclude the story of Elphaba and Glinda. The movie will pick up from when the first ended and will follow the stage show and begin at its second act.
Set in the Land of Oz, before and after Dorothy Gale’s arrival from Kansas, the plot will follow Elphaba and Galinda’s friendship being put to the test as they embrace their new respective identities as the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good – and how the consequences of their actions will change all of Oz forever.
