Excitement is building for when season 2 of The Last of Us drops next month on HBO, and already fans are wondering if there will be a season 3 and more beyond.

Season 2 of The Last of Us picks up the action five years after the events of the first season.

The official season synopsis tells that Joel and Ellie are drawn into conflict with each other and a world even more dangerous and unpredictable than the one they left behind. Here is all we know about season 2 of The Last of Us.

The Last of Us season 3

Season 2 is based on the The Last of Us 2 video game, but doesn’t cover the whole of it. The remainder will be covered in season 3, which is already in development and set to start filming later this year.

But will there be more after that? That is more open to question as season 3 will potentially take us to where the video game ends and, as yet, there hasn’t been a The Last of Us 3. Whether there will be a The Last of Us 3 is still open to question – and its creator has been evasive on the question.

More to come

Neil Druckmann, who was creative director on the original video game and co-created the TV series, has recently been talking to CTV’s Etalk about the prospect of a The Last of Us 3 – or not.

“For there to be another [game]… so many stars have to align, so I can’t guarantee it,” he said. “Right now, my focus is on this season; hopefully if HBO renews us, next season. And then I am working on a new game called Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet. One project at a time.”

Previously, Druckmann and fellow executive producer Craig Mazin told Deadline that telling the complete story of The Last of Us 2 would take them to season 4, and HBO EVP Francesca Orsi backed this up.

But that could be the last of, well, The Last of Us. If Druckmann is working on another project after season 3 – and big games have a long gestation period – and only does one at a time, it could be some years before we get a The Last of Us 3, if at all.

So it could be case of fans making the most of these series. The Last of Us season 2 drops on April 13 on HBO.
