The profile of women’s football around the world has risen hugely in recent years and now this is being recognised in the latest iteration of one of the biggest football game franchises in the world.

Unique challenges

In the upcoming EA FC 25 for the first time players will be able to select a career mode in the women’s game. The game will have the same challenges as the men’s game but will also include challenges that are unique to the women’s game, according to EA Sports.

Gamers will be able to start their career as a player or a manager in any one of the WSL (England), Liga F (Spain), Frauen-Bundesliga (Germany), D1 Feminine (France) and the NWSL (USA).

The career mode option is fully integrated into the game and players can retire and then begin a career in management.

This is believed to be only the second major video game franchise to include a career option involving women players. The first was NBA 2K’s WNBA Career Mode, which was released last year.

Football Manager, one of the other leading video game franchises, is introducing women’s teams in its 2025 edition, according to developer Sports Interactive.

Range of new options

The addition of the women’s career mode is one of a raft of new options and updates that is coming to EA FC 25. One of the other innovations is a live start point in manager and player career modes, allowing gamers to live out the biggest storylines of the season by starting their game at any gameweek in the 2024/5 season.

EA FC 25 is released on September 27 on all major platforms, with early access from September 20. It is available to pre-order now.
