- The latest in the franchise has reportedly been shot on adapted mobile phones
- 28 Weeks Later is the third in the franchise,
- Danny Boyle and Cillian Murphy both return to the series having missed 28 Weeks Later

The upcoming 28 Years Later film has been shot on an adapted iPhone 15, according to reports.
Smart move
Wired has reported that the film, the third in the franchise, was filmed over the summer with iPhone 15s. With the film, directed by Danny Boyle, having a budget said to be $75 million, it will make it one of the biggest films to be recorded on a smartphone to date.
28 Weeks Later is the third film in the franchise, following 2002’s 28 Days Later and 28 Weeks Later from 2007.
However, 28 Years Later is not being billed as the third in a trilogy, rather the first film in a new trilogy – two further films are planned. This film reunites Boyle with Alex Garland, who wrote the script for this film as well as the first. Both were executive producers on the 2007 film but that was as far as their involvement went.
The film has a strong Anglo-centric cast, headed by Cillian Murphy, who returns to the role he played in the first film. Also starring are Jodie Comer, Ralph Fiennes and Aaron Taylor-Johnson.
Details to be revealed
Details of the plot have yet to be revealed, other than that Murphy is reprising his role from the first film. The first film centred on Murphy’s character, a courier who wakes up from a coma to a world that has been ravaged by the Rage virus, which has turned most of the population to zombies. It follows his struggle to survive and escape Britain to France where the virus hadn’t spread to.
Production has recently wrapped on the film, which has been picked up by Sony. The studio plans to release the film on June 20, 2025.
