A Minecraft Movie is finally heading our way after a lengthy stint stuck on a loading screen in development limbo.
Based on Mojang Studios’ popular open-world video game, A Minecraft Movie has been in the works for a while now. The project was first discussed back in 2012 and over the years, many different creative teams have tried to bring it to life.
After more than a decade of patient waiting, fans will soon be transported into a colorful blocky world where building anything is possible. Their guide will be Napoleon Dynamite director Jared Hess and stars like Jason Momoa and Jack Black – but what will they find once they land in his video game world?

When is A Minecraft Movie released?
A Minecraft Movie will be released theatrically and in IMAX in the United States and the United Kingdom on 4 April 2025.
This wasn’t always the plan. Originally, it was set to land on 24 May 2019 before Warner Bros. Decided to push the film to March 2022.
Covid complications forced the film to shift yet again to avoid a box office confrontation with The Batman which opened around the same time.
This decision led the film to go without a release date for two years. Eventually, Warner Bros. finally revealed that it would debut in April 2024.
Is there a trailer for A Minecraft Movie?
The first full trailer for A Minecraft Movie landed in late November 2024 and put unsuspecting hero Steve front and centre.
A wannabe miner, Steve unwittingly stumbles into a vibrant digital wonderland where it’s possible to build anything you can dream of… as long as it’s block-shaped.
It’s here where a group of new players suddenly find themselves. Together, they’re forced to work with Steve to stop an evil that threatens to destroy the Minecraft world.

Meanwhile, the first teaser trailer for A Minecraft Movie made its way online in early September 2024. It showcased blocky sheep, blocky pigs and Momoa with a ridiculous hairdo.
“Everything you can dream about here you can make,” said the mysterious Steve, welcoming the movie’s heroes to this unusual new world.

Universal released a short teaser trailer in February 2025, preparing fans for the second trailer that’s set to drop. In the teaser we catch a glimpse of Hoglins, the hostile mob found in the Nether. Teaser trailer below.
On 27 February, Warner Bros released a final trailer for the upcoming Minecraft movie. In the trailer, we see Jack Black and the rest of the cast land into the Overworld and get a glimpse of the Minecraft mechanics adapted to the screen. There is also a greater look into the movie’s main conflict, the Nether. You can watch the trailer below.
What is the plot of A Minecraft Movie?
A Minecraft Movie will pit a group of strangers against an alien world where they must fight for its survival.
“Welcome to the world of Minecraft, where creativity doesn’t just help you craft, it’s essential to one’s survival,” says the movie’s synopsis.
It continues, explaining that the movie’s four misfits Garrett, Henry, Natalie and Dawn “find themselves struggling with ordinary problems when they are suddenly pulled through a mysterious portal.”
Once through, they find themselves in the Overworld, a place described as a “bizarre, cubic wonderland that thrives on imagination.”
It adds: “To get back home, they’ll have to master this world (and protect it from evil things like Piglins and Zombies, too) while embarking on a magical quest with an unexpected, expert crafter, Steve.
“Together, their adventure will challenge all five to be bold and to reconnect with the qualities that make each of them uniquely creative… the very skills they need to thrive back in the real world.”
Who is starring in A Minecraft Movie?
Black will play Steve, an outsider who stumbles into the Minecraft world and becomes an expert at everything it offers. Black previously worked with the movie’s director Hess on 2006’s Mexican wrestling comedy Nacho Libre.
Steve’s joined by four newbies who find themselves transported into his Minecraft arena. These include Momoa’s Garrett ‘The Garbage Man’ Garrison – complete with a pink jacket and flowing retro hair.
Wednesday’s Emma Myers will star as Natalie, with Lisey’s Story actor Sebastian Eugene Hansen playing her younger brother Henry. Orange is the New Black’s Danielle Brooks will also appear as a character named Dawn.
Together, these guys will be joined by a host of supporting actors. However, we don’t currently know how any of them will fit into the wider plot.
Expect to see The White Lotus star Jennifer Coolidge, What We Do in the Shadows’ actor Matt Berry, Saturday Night Live alum Kate McKinnon and regular Hess collaborator Jemaine Clement.
In addition, the popular YouTuber Valkyrae is also said to feature in a cameo role.
