- The Detroit Lions are 10-1 this season
- The Lions are the only franchise operational for the whole Super Bowl era to not appear in the Super Bowl
- A 24-6 victory over the Indianapolis Colts leaves the Lions top of the NFC North after 11 games
The Detroit Lions could be heading for history.
We may not even have arrived at the post-season yet, but Dan Campbell’s team are generating a ton of chatter about a potential Super Bowl appearance, after a dominant run which has seen Detroit go 10-1 in their opening 11 games. It is the first time the Lions have managed such a record after 11 games since 1934.
And, whisper it very, very quietly, but for one of the rare times in franchise history, the Lions are are now the bookmakers favourites to win the Super Bowl. Which is wild, given the fact Detroit are the only franchise active throughout the entire Super Bowl era who have never actually reached one.
The turnaround under Dan Campbell’s leadership is remarkable, with a first division title since 1993 arriving last year as well as a first playoff win since 1991. Not to mention the franchise’s second NFC Championship appearance.
The Detroit Lions look more Super Bowl Bound then ANY team in the NFL right now! They are 10-1 for the first time since 1934!

No team in the NFC has scored more points this season and no NFC team has allowed fewer points. Plus Jahmyr Gibbs is channeling his inner Allen Iverson pic.twitter.com/EuXTtk8EiC
Since a second day 20-16 defeat to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the Lions have won nine straight, including humblings of the Dallas Cowboys (47-9), the Tennessee Titans (52-14) and the Jacksonville Jaguars (52-6). The Lions are sure to be ravenous as they head into a Thanksgiving clash against a Chicago Bears team who have lost their last five.
The importance of David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs is impossible to overstate, with ‘Sonic and Knuckles’ becoming the first pair of running back teammates in NFL history with at least 10 rushing touchdowns apiece in consecutive seasons. Not only that but, along with Amon-Ra St. Brown, have all scored TD in the same game for the Lions eight times, which is the most instances of a trio of teammates doing so in NFL history.

Detroit’s form is also giving bookmakers sleepless nights. “They’re by far our biggest Super Bowl liability and pretty much our only one at this point,” BetMGM trader Christian Cipollini told The Athletic. “Anything inside of 10-1 [odds] we don’t tend to build crazy liability that we’re worried about, but everybody has been on them. At this point, the Lions winning the Super Bowl would be a huge problem for us. If I could remove them from futures, I would.
“We hate the Lions. I haven’t seen something like this in my time at BetMGM. Every single week, they’re our worst team. I think something like 95 percent of the bets last week [vs. the Jaguars] were on Detroit.”
Well, if they’re giving the bookies sleepless nights, how can we not root for the Detroit Lions to finally overcome their Super Bowl curse and win the whole thing, this season?
