Thanksgiving is the annual American holiday that sees people put aside their differences and eat together. The clue is in the name regarding what it’s all about: the giving of thanks. Gratitude is an attitude, and so on.

However, as with many things, putting it into practice can be hard. It can even trickier after one of the most polarising elections in US history and still stressful even if you align politically. Family, friends and lots of cooking can be a recipe for a disaster.

One way to make this potentially contentious day run better is via the magic of movies. That said, picking one can also bring conflict.

Thankfully, with this list of recommendations now streaming on Netflix, the problem can be easily solved. So, after eating your turkey and desserts, why not pop one of these Thanksgiving films on?

Always Be My Maybe

This 2019 romcom stars Ali Wong and Randall Park and sees their characters, who harboured crushes on each other during high school, reconnect over the holiday. It’s essentially good, easy-going holiday fare, perfect after the big wash-up.

Book Club

This 2018 ensemble piece stars Diane Keaton, Jane Fonda, Candice Bergen and Mary Steenburgen. It’s about the exploits of a reading group and has the same cosy vibes that are synonymous with Thanksgiving. As you’ll discover after you hit play, the foursome have their lives changing by reading Fifty Shades of Grey.

Holidate

This 2020 romcom is perfect for those singletons feeling the pressure to find someone before the holidays. It follows Emma Robert’s Sloane getting into an agreement of sorts with Luke Bracey’s Jackson.

Martha

This isn’t strictly speaking about Thanksgiving, but it is good to get some inspiration for the food-part of the holiday. Martha Stewart invented the modern conception of the American domestic goddess and this documentary takes you on a journey explaining exactly how she did this.

Thanksgiving

The cinematic giving of thanks does not have to be a rom-com or pleasant, as this horror shows. Released in 2023, Eli Roth’s holiday-themed bloodbath is perfect if you want something that fits that bill.
