It was another afternoon to forget for Manchester City, as Pep Guardiola’s all-conquering Premier League champions succumbed to their fourth consecutive league defeat, against Liverpool at Anfield.

The emphatic 2-0 loss, which could have been far, far worse for the reigning English champions, was City’s sixth in seven games. The only game City haven’t lost in this miserable run was when they throw away a 3-0 home lead against Feyernoord in a 3-3 Champions League draw.

It was a particularly rancid afternoon for City’s usually free-scoring cyborg Erling Haaland. The Norwegian centre-forward did not win a single ground or aerial duel, completed only seven passes and managed a solitary shot on target. City’s number nine was completely anonymous as Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk pocketed him for the entire 90 minutes.

Such an anonymous display by the former Borussia Dortmund man added further fuel to the fire for social media users, who have been very keen to remind Haaland of a comment he made to Arsenal’s players in the wake of their 2-2 draw earlier in the season.

After City had scrapped home a last minute equaliser against the Gunners in September, Haaland was filmed rather flippantly telling Arsenal’s players to be humble. The brashness of the Norwegian’s attitude didn’t just rub Arsenal fans up the wrong way, but gave the rest of the league’s fanbases a significant amount of ammo to fire back in the Scandinavian striker’s direction.

Since that 2-2 draw over two months ago, City have won only three of their eight Premier League games. All by the odd goal. Their current run of seven winless games, including humblings against Tottenham (twice) and Sporting CP, as well as today’s at Anfield, has seen a significant uptick in the usage of “stay humble” on X. So much so that the phrase was trending in the wake of another disastrous performance from Haaland and co.

Manchester City will be hoping this week will see them turn their fortunes around as they host sixth placed Nottingham Forest. A win for the visitors would take them above City, who now, somehow, have worse goal difference than local rivals Manchester United.
