- Big screen version of the classic 80s animated series coming in 2026
- Huge roster of stars signed up to star in the movie
- Plot will see some of the action take place on Earth

Masters of the Universe will get theater goers of a certain generation very excited – but those of all ages should be too.
For those who don’t remember it, Masters of the Universe was one of the biggest animated shows of the mid-1980s. Tied in to the cartoon, there was a hugely popular toy line produced by Mattel. There followed comic books and a live-action movie in 1987, with Dolph Lundgren in the title role and also starring a young Courtney Cox – who also might be returning to the Scream franchise – but it was generally panned by critics and fans.
Since then, there have been various reboots of the animated show – but none as popular as the original – and protracted talks about bringing Masters of the Universe to the big screen.
But now, a new movie is definitely happening and here’s all we know about it.
What’s it all about
The film will focus on 10-year-old Prince Adam, who crashes to Earth in a spaceship and gets separated from his magical Power Sword – which is also the only link to his home on Eternia.
But, after spending the best part of 20 years tracking it down, Prince Adam is taken back across space to defend Eternia from the evil forces of Skeletor. But to defeat him, Prince Adam must uncover the mysteries of his past and become He-Man.
Who is starring in Masters of the Universe
The cast list is filling up. Nicholas Galitizine is playing Prince Adam/He-Man, while He-Man’s nemesis, Skeletor is being played by Jared Leto. Alison Brie will be Skeletor’s hench-woman, Evil-Lyn. Camila Mendes has been cast as Teela, a friend of He-Man and daughter of Man-At-Arms.
Idris Elba is set to play Man-At-Arms. Also known as Duncan, Man-At-Arms is a weapons master and combat instructor to the royal family in Eternia. Elba will shortly be appearing in Sonic The Hedgehog 3, where he voices Knuckles.
Original 1987 He-Man actor Dolph Lundgren is heavily rumored to be making a cameo in the new film. Fans are expecting him to play King Grayskull.
Who is writing and directing Masters of the Universe
The script has been written by English writer Chris Butler, who is known for Kubo and the Two Strings, among others.
Meanwhile Travis Knight is in the director’s chair – he’s best known for Bumblebee. Producers include Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal, Robbie Brenner and Steve Tisch.
Masters of the Universe is a co-production between Escape Artists and Mattel.
When is Masters of the Universe in theaters
Masters of the Universe is set to hit theaters on 5 June, 2026.
