US soccer star Trinity Rodman has opened up about her relationship with her father, Dennis, saying that she doesn’t have his contact details these days.
Talking to Alex Cooper from the Call Her Daddy podcast, 22-year-old Trinity gave an insight into their relationship and what it was like growing up with Dennis, who is notorious for his wild lifestyle.
No contact
Trinity, who plays as a forward for Washington Spirit, revealed that she currently doesn’t have her father’s contact details. This is partly because he often changes his number but also because she doesn’t want to chase after him anymore.
“He’s called me recently from a Texas number – news to me, given I didn’t even know he lived there,” she said.
This comes after years of hope for their relationship to improve. Trinity said Dennis would try to reconnect with her – including turning up unannounced at one of her matches – but it wouldn’t last.
“Maybe I was foolish for thinking it was going to change,” she said. “Every time he shows up, I think ‘this is the start,’ but it’s always the same pattern. He’s present for a moment, then disappears for months – this time even years.”
Not a reliable parent
Dennis was a five-time NBA champion back in the 1980s and 90s but became as famous for his wild lifestyle as his on-court prowess. His hard-partying and hard-drinking exploits became legend, alongside many relationships – including briefly with Madonna. It is only in the past 15 years that he has sought treatment for alcoholism.
This lifestyle meant that he wasn’t a reliable parent, according to Trinity. “We [Trinity and her brother, DJ] tried to live with him but he’s having parties 24/7, he is brining in random [expletive] in,” she said. “He loves the spotlight, he loves the cameras, he loves bringing us on stage and being like ‘these are my kids.”
But then she added: “He’s not a dad. Maybe by blood, but nothing else.”
Dennis has yet to comment on his daughter’s interview.
While Dennis is an NBA legend, one of the current crop of talents made another move up the all-time points scorer list recently. Steph Curry overtook long-time critic Charles Barkley when he scored his 23,747th point.
