When it premiered in November 2022, the show broke Netflix records. According to Tudum, Wednesday has reached over 252,100,000 viewers in just one season.

In its first viewing week, it drew 3.73 million viewers, according to Deadline. Soon after its premiere, Netflix renewed it for season 2 thanks to its record-breaking potential. Netflix announced the news in January 2023, and fans celebrated the update.

For a while, news about Wednesday stayed quiet. However, that changed when Netflix released a first look in September 2024. The sneak peek revealed potential storyline hints for season 2, promising to continue exploring the cliffhanger from season 1. In addition to teasing new storylines, the trailer showcased new and returning characters for the upcoming season. So, who is returning and who is new?

Ortega has kept busy since Wednesday premiered in 2022, starring in two Scream movies. In 2024, she appeared in Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice sequel, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. Despite her packed schedule, she will return as the titular character in Wednesday season 2. Netflix confirmed her return during promotions for the new season. In December, they shared a photo of Ortega in costume, scowling as her character.

Showrunners Gough and Millar told Tudum, “This season, Wednesday’s journey is darker and more complex as she navigates family, friends, new mysteries, and old adversaries, propelling her headlong into another year at Nevermore.”

Ortega also shared insights about season 2. In June 2023, she told Entertainment Weekly that season 2 would “lean into the horror aspect”. On personal storylines, Ortega said, “I think that we’re kind of ditching any romantic love interest for Wednesday, which is really great.”

In season 1, Wednesday had a love triangle with normie-turned-monster Tyler Galpin(Hunter Doohan) and suspicious bad boy Xavier Thorpe (Percy Hynes-White).

Despite his popularity, Xavier will not return in season 2. Hynes-White faced allegations of sexual assault in January 2023, shortly after the show was renewed, and was quietly dropped from the series.

Ortega’s return may be tied to her creative involvement in season 2. She now serves as an executive producer, a growing trend among Hollywood stars like Selena Gomez, who produces her show Only Murders in the Building.

Many familiar faces will return for Wednesday season 2 alongside Ortega. Emma Myers returns as Enid Sinclair, Joy Sunday reprises her role as siren Bianca Barclay, Moosa Mostafa is back as Eugene Ottinger, as is Georgie Farmer as Enid’s werewolf boyfriend Ajax. Doohan also makes a mysterious return as Galpin. While the show’s creators confirmed his comeback, his role in the story remains unknown.

The Addams family takes on a bigger role this season. Catherine Zeta-Jones returns as Morticia, Luis Guzmán as Gomez, and Isaac Ordonez as Pugsley Addams. Luyanda Unati Lewis-Nyawo returns as Deputy Ritchie Santiago and has been promoted to a series regular.

Guest stars Jamie McShane, as Sheriff Donovan Galpin, and Fred Armisen, as Uncle Fester, are confirmed to return. And, of course, Victor Dorobantu will be back as Thing, prominently featured in promotional videos and social media.

Tudum announced several series regulars joining season 2.

Steve Buscemi joins as Barry Dot and Billie Piper joins as Capri. Additionally, Evie Templeton, Owen Temple, and Noah Taylor are confirmed as series regulars.

As for other guest stars, Christopher Lloyd, Frances O’Connor, Haley Joel Osment, Heather Matarazzo, and Joonas Suotamo will also appear in season 2.

Rumors suggest singer Lady Gaga may make a guest appearance. Her song Bloody Mary became the show’s unofficial theme online. The Wednesday dance was no longer associated with the song in the show, Goo Goo Muck, and instead, was paired with Gaga’s track. Variety and other outlets confirmed Gaga’s guest role in November 2024. Filming for season 2 wrapped in December 2024, so if she’s had a cameo, we’ll know soon.

Who is not returning?

A few characters will not return for Wednesday season 2. Thorpe is gone due to the controversy surrounding Percy Hynes-White, and other Nevermore students are also missing from the lineup. Naomi J. Ogawa, who played Nevermore student Yoko confirmed she would not return.

On Instagram, Ogawa shared, “There’s been news going around that I won’t be returning for season 2 of Wednesday. I can confirm this to be true. Due to the ongoing uncertain scheduling and not much progression in Yoko’s journey, I decided to step away from season two. This was a very difficult decision for me to make.”

With Wednesday season 2 not expected until late 2025, other casting details remain under wraps. Stay tuned for more updates as they emerge.
