- The third season of the hit K-drama will be its last
- It will likely come out later this year
- It was shot at the same time as season 2

Squid Game’s season three has got the green light – but what might unfold?
We do already know that the third instalment of the hit Netflix k-drama will be its last. Consequently, we can expect it to tie up any loose ends for a satisfying, but likely bloody, conclusion.
In addition, we probably won’t have such a long wait between seasons, like with seasons one and two.

Netflix confirmed that season three will be coming in 2025. This was possible because the two instalments were shot back-to-back.
What do we know about season three’s plot?

Firstly, we know we’ll see some of the games that weren’t part of season 2. The second season only featured three of the six games that appeared in season 1.
Creator Hwang Dong-hyuk said last year that this happened because he originally envisioned seasons two and three as one complete season. However, he split it in two because he had too much material to squeeze into one instalment.
“I originally envisioned it as a single series, so both seasons two and three as a single series when I was writing it,” Hwang told CinemaBlend. “But then, as I wrote the story along, it became to be too many episodes and too long of a story because you see Gi-hun’s journey where he returns to the game, but also he goes through a revolt, and that is actually the climax of that storyline, where he tries to create an uprising, but then that all goes to failure.
“And I also saw that aspect of it as yet another game as well, and so I thought that we would divide it into two seasons to have that – Gi-hun’s revolt going into a failure, him ending up losing his best friend, that itself being yet another important climatic event in the first half of the season, so into season two.”

He added: “And to put a stop there, I thought that would just be the right adequate moment to rest and have it continue on in the further season because after Gi-hun experiences that event, based on the failure, as well as that immense sense of guilt, you’re going to get yet another character arc from Gi-hun. So I thought it would be better to divide that for another season.”
Elsewhere, in the letter to fans that confirmed the final season, Hwang also nodded to “he fierce clash between [Gi-hun and Front Man’s] two worlds” continuing.
In an interview with Variety., Hwang offered some more hints.
“But as for the storyline of the third season, Gi-hun having lost everything, including his best friend, and all of his attempts going to failure, it’s now, what is he going to be like?” he said. “What state is Gi-hun going to be in? And what will he choose to do? Will he continue on with the mission? Is he going to give up or persist?
“And so you’re going to meet our character Gi-hun at a very critical crossroads as we begin the third season. Gi-hun will not be the man he was in Season 2.”
So when might we get to see it?
Hwang also pointed to a rough release timeline in the interview.

“At this point, anything I might say is going to be a spoiler, so I want to be cautious. But what I can say is, after Season 2 launches, I believe we will be announcing the launch date for Season 3 soon. I probably expect that to launch around summer or fall next year.”
