- Ex-Rockstar dev claims GTA 6 may run at 30 FPS on consoles at launch
- Performance optimizations could allow 60 FPS on PC with better specs
- Rockstar has yet to confirm any frame rate details for GTA 6

The Grand Theft Auto May not offer the high FPS for consoles as fans are expecting, 60 FPS. There are chances for them to get to play the game at 30 FPS upon launching this year.
Rockstar Could Prioritize Stability Over High FPS
GTA 6 is one of the most anticipated games of the decade, but a former developer has mentioned concerns regarding this, and players now have to lower their expectations.
In a recent interview with (Via Games Radar) Kiwi Talkz, ex-Rockstar animator Mike York shared his thoughts on the game’s potential frame rate. According to York, Rockstar is likely aiming for 30 FPS instead of 60 FPS to ensure smooth performance.
He stated, “I don’t know if they’ll be able to pull off 60fps. ” I don’t think so. I think they’re gonna be shooting for 30fps – and a locked 30fps, meaning it never dips below that. They’re gonna try to optimize as much as they can to where it never goes below 30. But it can be bumped up to 40, 41, 52, whatever”
If this is going to be true somehow, then this decision also seems to make sense as GTA 6, being an open-world game, requires more power to run smoothly, and considering this aspect, playing it on a console with 60 FPS may not offer a flawless experience.
York also explained that locking the Frame rates at 30 could prevent the performance drop. He further mentioned that “I don’t think [the] initial release it’ll come out at 60fps unless it’s getting those 60fps by [using] an AI more upscale thing like the PlayStation is doing unless something is coming in and helping it get those 60fps,”
PC Version Expected to Support Higher Frame Rates
York stated. “I don’t think it’ll get the 60fps raw out the gate on a base console. PS5, for instance. Maybe PS5 Pro, or whatever, but I still don’t think so.” However, the situation is not the same in the case of a PC; it has a powerful system that can support a high FPS.
He said, “Once it’s on PC, it’ll probably get super optimized and changed and new graphics cards that come out, and you’ll be able to run it at 60fps probably at that time.”
Now, players are just eagerly waiting for the game’s release, and for them, getting their hands on the game seems enough. They have been waiting for GTA 6 for so long, and since the first trailer in 2023, they didn’t get any new updates from the developers.
Besides this, all this time, they got nothing but leaks, the fake ones. Speaking of FPS, only time will tell whether Rockstar manages to achieve higher frame rates on consoles.
