It was thought that Chris Evans was to return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday but now the star has shut down those rumors.

Back in December, it was reported that Evans, who played Steve Rogers/Captain America in multiple MCU films over more than a decade, was on board to play a role in the forthcoming Avengers: Doomsday

But at the time, Marvel didn’t confirm the news (or deny it) and nor did Evans.

Chris Evans: happily retired

Anthony Mackie, who is playing Sam Wilson/Captain America in the upcoming Captain America: Brave New World, had also muddied the waters. He said that he too had heard that Evans was coming back – although he did add that he hadn’t seen a script yet for Avengers: Doomsday.

But now Evans has shut down the talk that he is coming back to the MCU. In an interview with Esquire, he said that reports of his return were “not true.”

Evans added: “This always happens. I mean, it happens every couple of years, ever since Endgame. I’ve stopped responding to it. Yeah, no. Happily retired.”

Of course, Evans has already briefly returned to the MCU, when he reprised his version of the Fantastic Four’s Johnny Storm – from the Fox films of the early 21st century – for a cameo in 2024’s Deadpool & Wolverine.

Who is in Avengers: Doomsday

So while Evans’ words sound final, we do have to remember there is a history of actors giving misdirection ahead of MCU films. Famously, Andrew Garfield denied he would reprise his version of Spider-Man for Spider-Man: No Way Home, only to turn up in a major role.

But there are rumours that plenty of other MCU favorites will return for Avengers: Doomsday, which is being directed by the Russo Brothers. Names in the frame – although not confirmed – include some of the original Avengers team, such as Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), Thor (Chris Hemsworth) and Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner).

Another alleged returnee is Agent Peggy Carter, played by Hayley Atwell in various MCU films and her own series. She too bowed out, alongside Rogers, at the end of Endgame. Given Evans’ comments, does this mean she too isn’t coming back?

Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled to hit theaters in summer 2026.
