Hayley Atwell is set to reprise her role of Agent Peggy Carter in the upcoming Marvel movie Avengers: Doomsday, according to reports.

Return after beautiful ending?

Deadline first reported that Atwell was returning to the MCU, having apparently bowed out at the end of Avengers: Endgame. However, nobody from Marvel or Disney – or the actor herself – has confirmed this.

Agent Carter has been a regular character in the MCU since its early days. She first appeared in Captain America: The First Avenger back in 2011 and appeared in various MCU films – usually alongside Captain America – as well as the spinoff TV series Agent Carter, which ran from 2015 to 2016. Her last appearance to date saw her grow old with Steve Rogers. Atwell said at the time it was a beautiful ending for the character. It was assumed that this was the last time the character would be seen in the MCU.

A return for Agent Carter also ties in with the rumor that Chris Evans is set to reprise his role as Steve Rogers in Avengers: Doomsday. Earlier this month, it was reported Evans was making a shock return to the franchise.

However, it is thought that Sam Wilson – played by Anthony Mackie – will be returning in the film as Captain America, so who Evans will be isn’t clear. He could return as Rogers, but, as Robert Downey Jr has proved, he could play a different character entirely. Downey Jr is playing Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday.

Time travel?

Could this mean there is a time travel element to Avengers: Doomsday? As mentioned, both Agent Carter and Rogers ended up growing old together at the end of Endgame. It could happen – the Fantastic Four also also rumored to be in Avengers: Doomsday, and it has been confirmed that their solo film, out next year, is set in the 1960s.
