The Met Gala 2025 has unveiled the theme for this year’s star-studded event celebrating the New York museum.

Taking place on 5 May with host Anna Wintour, the annual Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute has given their annual fundraiser a theme of ‘Tailored For You’.

According to US Vogue, the description refers to this year’s exhibition ‘Superfine: Tailoring Black Style’, which centres on menswear and is “purposefully designed to provide guidance and invite creative interpretation.”

This is probably a welcome disclaimer as the celebs who grace the red carpet often do not stick to the theme, or if they do, it’s not very obvious at first glance.

What else has been revealed about the Met Gala 2025?

According to the fashion bible, the Museum has labelled this year’s show as “a cultural and historical examination of the Black dandy, from the figure’s emergence in Enlightenment Europe during the 18th century to today’s incarnations in cities around the world.”

They hope it leads to an updated edition of the “dandy” in modern-day pop culture. The exhibition opens on 10 May.

Originating in the 18th century to refer to Black men, it once meant “a man devoted to style”. It has gone on to be taken to express the varying shapes that Black style iterations have taken.

The announcement continues, “Dandyism offered Black people an opportunity to use clothing, gesture, irony, and wit to transform their given identities and imagine new ways of embodying political and social possibilities.

Who is co-chairing this year?

A whole host of Black style icons have formed the committee this year. NBA superstar LeBron James is serving as the honourary co-chair alongside Wintour.

Those joining the pair on the planning team include Pharrell Williams, Colman Domingo, A$AP Rocky and Lewis Hamilton.

The rest of the Met Gala 2025 committee team includes other huge names like Andre 3000, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Grace Wales Bonner, Simone Biles and her husband, Jonathan Owens.
