Hollywood star Jack Black is set to take on the iconic role of Steve in the upcoming movie adaptation of best-selling block-building adventure game Minecraft.

Black will take on the role, according to reports, joining Aquaman star Jason Momoa, Emma Myers, who is best known for her role in Wednesday, and Danielle Brooks, best known for Peacemaker. Jared Hess is directing the film.

Currently, little is known about the specifics of the film, such as the plot and who is writing it, but it is eagerly anticipated as game and movie fans wait to see how the iconic blocky format of the game is transposed to the big screen.

If confirmed, this is another foray into video game-related movies for Black. Last year, Black had a star turn as Bowser in the smash hit Super Mario Bros Movie, even getting an entry onto the Billboard Hot 100 chart after it for his song in the movie ‘Peaches’. Black is also set to star in another video game adaptation, Borderlands, which is slated for release in the summer.

Minecraft, first launched in 2009, has become the best-selling video game in history, with more than 300 million copies sold and about 140 million active players every month. It has also included Minecraft Story Mode games, where players take a character through a defined movie-like plot.
