Emilia Perez is still being rocked by scandal amid what should be an exciting time for the Netflix movie, according to reports.

The film has been hit with another embarrassing awards blow as Karla Sofía Gascón’s name was not present on a recent BAFTA seating plan. Her co-stars Selena Gomez and Zoe Saldana did feature on the plan for Sunday 16 February, according to The Mail Online.

The omission comes as her Best Actress nod makes up one of the 11 categories the Jacques Audriard film is up for at the London ceremony.

The movie – which already faced widespread backlash for its portrayal of transgender issues and Mexico – is up for 13 Oscars at the 97th Academy Awards. One of these is another Best Actress nomination for Gascón.

What did the Emilia Perez star Karla Sofía Gascón say on social media?

Between 2016 and 2021, Gascón posted a vast array of Islamophobic, racist and other problematic things on her social media. Targets of her ire included Muslims, the Black Lives Matter movement and even the Academy Awards. One from November 2020 read, “I’m sorry. Is it just my impression or is there more muslims in Spain? Every time I go to pick up my daughter from school there are more women with their hair covered and their skirts down to their heels. Next year instead of English we’ll have to teach Arabic.”

On George Floyd, the Black murdered in broad daylight by the police officer Derek Chauvin, she posted, ” really think that very few people ever cared about George Floyd, a drug addict swindler, but his death has served to once again demonstrate that there are people who still consider black people to be monkeys without rights and consider policemen to be assassins. They are both wrong.”
